ESL Volunteer Application

The mission of Christ Community Church's English as a Second Language program is to help refugees, immigrants, and foreign-born in Omaha learn English, make friends, and explore faith. We aim to show the love of Christ through our actions and words.


A Typical Tuesday Schedule:
5:45 PM | Teachers arrive to set up
6:05–6:15 PM | ESL Team Prayer
6:30–8:30 PM | ESL Class

A Typical Thursday Schedule
8:35 AM | Teachers arrive to set up
8:55–9:05 AM | ESL Team Prayer
9:15–11:15 AM | ESL Class

The Curriculum:
CCC provides ESL teachers with curriculum by Intercambio and Neighbor to Neighbor. To view samples of lessons and materials, visit the Intercambio website. To view lessons, visit the Neighbor to Neighbor website.

Expectations for Teachers:
∙ Complete orientation and teacher training
∙ Commit to serving for a full year
∙ Dedicate four to five hours every week to lesson planning and teaching
∙ Prepare short five-minute Bible lessons
∙ Be well-prepared so students have the chance to succeed
∙ Contact any absent students shortly after the class to communicate care
∙ Commit to personally praying for the students
∙ In case of absence, find a substitute and communicate with the ESL Coordinator
∙ Provide lesson plans for substitute teachers
∙ Attend quarterly ESL teacher meetings for enrichment and collaboration
∙ Register and interview new students as needed

Expectations for Teacher Helpers:
∙ Complete orientation and teacher training
∙ Commit to serve for a full year
∙ Dedicate four hours every week to volunteering
∙ Contribute to planning and preparing as the teacher needs
∙ Engage with students in the classroom, especially in small group break-out conversations
∙ Contribute to planning and preparing of social events
∙ Be well-prepared so students have the chance to succeed
∙ Commit to personally praying for the students
∙ Attend quarterly ESL teacher meetings for enrichment and collaboration
∙ Register and interview new students as needed

Expectations for Substitute Teachers:
∙ Complete orientation and teacher training 
∙ Commit to serving for a full year 
∙ Be available weekly to sub for any ESL level if needed 
∙ Be willing to cover a class at the last minute if an emergency arises for a teacher 
∙ Dedicate four hours to lesson planning and teaching every week you are covering another teacher's class 
∙ Prepare short five-minute Bible lessons
∙ Be well-prepared so students have the chance to succeed 
∙ Commit to personally praying for the students 
∙ Attend quarterly ESL teacher meetings for enrichment and collaboration
Contribute to planning and preparing of social events 
∙ Register and interview new students as needed
